Overview
Every record points at another one — a name checked, a beat lifted, a line answered two years later. That pointing is the history. Graph Scene puts it in one place so you can walk it: 34,469 songs, 1,723 artists, and 1,658 shout-outs tied to the actual bar that contains them. Any two rappers turn out to sit about 3.1 steps apart.
What it does
Run the route between any two names and see the shortest path with the song behind each hop, or play it as a six-degrees guessing game. Beyond the graph: a full roster, head-to-head crate comparisons, a beef section that quotes the actual bars, sample digs traced to their sources, lyric-counted topic trends by year, 21 city scenes, producer and label views, a slang glossary, and a search across every bar in the corpus. “Runs” on the home page tell stories a timeline can’t — a voice travelling 24 years from Biggie to a 2018 beat switch, or three records reaching back to Nina Simone inside a decade.
How it’s built
Name-drops aren’t hand-typed — they’re extracted from lyrics and then verified one by one, because “chuck” in a bar is usually not Chuck D. The data is assembled from public sources and openly acknowledges its limits: lyric sites hand you the wrong words, credits point at compilations, and a diss still counts as a connection. Corrections get made in the open. No ads, nothing sold — a thank-you note to the culture, with a search box.
